You See Yourself?

You See Yourself?, an ongoing series featuring Black women, girls and non-binary people, moves beyond the idea that 'you need to be able to see us' to the recognition that we are the ones who need to be able to see ourselves, both in front of the camera and behind it.  Each set of portraits is created in collaboration with the sitter, producing images that share how they wish to be seen.

Expanding on an earlier project which focused on Black muslim women and girls, You See Yourself adds to the ever growing archive of photos reflecting those still too often absent in visual representation.

A selection from this series featured as part of Manifesting The Unseen, a one month residency at Guest Projects, and it was also a part of the inaugural IFE NKILI festival.

This project received part of an ESRC grant in 2019.
